Wise Kids

After several years of neglect, I'm updating our blog!  And man has a lot changed, including the addition of 2 new babies since our move back to my hometown of College Station away from the big city life in Dallas.

Our oldest Jacob is now 13 years old {how is this possible?} and in Challenge A, part of Classical Conversations.  His class is robust and his director is AMAZING.  I truly love that she gets my child and encourages him and challenges him to be his best.  His favorite subject is math and he's currently studying Life of Fred Algebra.

We used Saxon Math from 2nd grade - 5th/6th grade and started adding in some Life of Fred for "fun".  For real... they could shorten their Saxon assignments by 1/2 2-3 days a week and "get" to do more math lessons from Life of Fred.  I'm not sure how I came up with this, but it was one of my more genius homeschool mom moments.

What got him hooked on Life of Fred was their Pre-Algebra series.  His favorite was the Physics book, but biology was great too.  The Economics version was challenging for sure, but he got through it.

Joelle is in Essentials this year with Classical Conversations, and sadly will only get one year before moving on to Challenge A next year.  We were doing classical curriculum at home and at a University Model School previously, so she will do fine next year, but I think 2 years of Essentials would have been better for her.  She loves IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) materials, which she uses this year for writing as well, so that's been a smooth transition.    This year we are doing U.S. History in Foundations, so the U.S. History based writing lessons fit perfectly.  Integrating subjects is one of MY favorite parts of classical homeschooling.

Juliette is LOVING everything about learning.  She just turned 5 in August, so I'm trying to slow her down and make sure she enjoys these magical moments of childhood, which evaporate before my eyes daily.  This is one of the biggest benefits of having older children and younger children {there are MANY}.  But seeing my older two kids grow up in the blink of an eye helps me remember that imaginary play doesn't last forever, and getting to romp around the yard and chase chickens is a luxury I want her to soak up this year.  But she is learning and we are finishing up All About Reading Pre-Reading and Starting Level 1.  She LOVES Ziggy!!!!  So when I bought Pre-Reading, I didn't think I needed Ziggy the Zebra (puppet), but trust me, you do!  So I bought this cute zebra puppet on Amazon instead and we he's beautiful!

As for my toddlers, Jonah is turing 3 this month, and is content most of the day to play with Juliette and learn alongside her most of the time.  Evie Joy is playing more too, so they are getting some quality time together when I need to teach Juliette one-on-one.

So these are our current favorite things!  I look forward to updating things that are working well for my kiddos and share our successes and challenges along the way.  If you're interested in knowing what else we use for curriculum in addition to Classical Conversations, I'll post some more links below.
